My first experience with Wine was Loganberry at 85 Cents a Bottle. (Gosh, I'm getting old!) I enjoy the sweet flavor of a Tawny Port and when I was a kid, my best friend's dad made a Wine he called Dago Red. Highly bitter, so we cut it with 7-up.

Now, I'm looking for a Red that is slightly sweet. Under $20 per bottle and not to be mixed with anything. :o) Choices at the Markets such as Trader Joes and the big stores like Fred Meyer are soe large that I get frustrated at my lack of Wine Education.

Suggestions? Thanks all.

Menage A Trois Red is slightly sweet, but tastes more so because it's so fruity.

I like fruity reds and enjoy Zinfandel, Cabernet and Pinot Noir, as well as blends. I'd recommend picking up an inexpensive bottle of each from a variety of wineries to give them a try rather than going for a specific label/brand.

I agree with kadymae's suggestion of the Ménage à Trois. Also, i'd suggest to you looking for wine stores in your vicinity that offer wine tasting for an easy chance to expand your palate.

For wines that are fun to drink (and relatively cheap) look around for some of more 'obscure' Italian grape varieties...

Dolcetto is great for red wine beginners, it's generally not fermented to dry (it's sweet) and carries a lot of fruit weight.
Valpolicella is another easy to drink, fresh luscious wine.

Also keep your eye out for Monstrell and Grenache, or Rhone style blends like GSMs (Grenache Shiraz Mouvedre) and Shiraz Viognier. All of these wines at that price point tend to be very fruit forward and nice to drink.

I second the recommendation of visiting your local bottle shop. Most offer wine tastings and it's a good way to expand your palate.

For a good red blend, try Marietta Old Vine Red, Sacred Stone, Crimson, Big Woop, or A by Acacia.

I don't know what the availability/price of French wines are outside of France, but a good Beaujolais is mild and fruity.

I also had Maury at a nice restaurant in Bordeaux on Christmas Eve, and my friend described it as 'the Dr. Pepper of wines.' Aka it was the best red wine I'd ever had, with almost caramel undertones.

I made of list of every recommendation. If I don't post for the next 6 weeks, you'll know I bought a bottle of each and sampled all! :o)

Thanks again.

I see the spamers have found a way to SPAM through "comments" to posts. It is also happening on another Community vintage_recipes.

in north carolina {where i live} we are blessed with lovely sweet local wines made from muscadine grapes... it *can* be dry, and not-so-sweet, but i'm a HUGE fan of the sweet ones, so i'm lucky to live here!
if you can find any, i know that the wineries here export some great wines, and a few to look for would be from duplin winery or maybe hinnant or denis wineries...

i just saw an article online mentioning that we now have over 100 wineries in the state {up from about 20 or so 20 years ago} and lots more in teh surrounding states as well...
